One way I think I could you the blog in my classroom is for students to discuss the bioethical situations that are arising in todays society. They can read case studies about cloning, genetic engineering, etc. and offer their opinions. I can have them debate via the blog to encourage thoughtful contributions to discussion. I could give them prompts to use that they can eventually practice in live, in class debates such as referring to another's comment, explaining why they agree or disagree using respectful language and pertinent support of their opinions. Students who might feel intimidated to contribute to heated debates would have an opportunity to share their insights without fear of being ridiculed or attacked for their thoughts.
I think that is a great idea. One way you may be able to accomplish the unit is to give each student a question or situation, have them post their response/research on the topic, and then require students to respond to a certain number of postings, just like we do for this course. I was thinking with my 10th grade English class, I could do that as well with a novel.
